Man charged after two bank robberies

A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with the robbery of two Winnipeg banks.

According to Winnipeg police, Geoffrey Wayne Bennett, 31, has been arrested in connection with the robberies of an Empress Street bank and a McPhillips Street bank. He was found on Sunday at 8:35 p.m. at a downtown home.

The Empress Street bank was robbed on Aug. 30 just before 2 p.m. Investigations have revealed a male suspect entered the bank alone and approached the teller, demanding cash and claiming he had a weapon. The teller complied, fearing for her safety, and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured.

The McPhillips Street bank was robbed on Sept. 1 at around 1:30 p.m.. A man  entered the bank, located in the 2200 block of McPhillips Street, and demanded cash from the teller. He claimed to have a gun. The man received cash and fled the scene. No one was injured.

Bennett was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of robbery. He is being detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
