Man charged in 2012 homicide

Winnipeg police have made an arrest in the ninth homicide committed in 2012.

Police announced today that Derek Davin Merrick, 19, was arrested on Thursday at about 2:10 p.m., and charged with second-degree murder.

Merrick has been detained in custody and the investigation is continuing.

Johnathen James Felix, 21, of Winnipeg, was found dead in a yard in the 200 block of Balmoral Street on March 31, at about 7:40 p.m.

Police said Felix was involved in a drug transaction with a group of men when an argument broke out. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot Felix before the men fled.

Relatives of Felix said at the time that he was not involved in gangs and had recently moved back to Winnipeg from British Columbia where he finished high school. They said he planned to pursue a modelling or acting career in Winnipeg.
