Man charged in downtown robberies

An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with two robberies on New Year’s Day in Winnipeg.

At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, a man who concealed his identity and was armed with a weapon tried to rob a store in the 500 block of Broadway, police said in a news release. The lone employee armed himself and the suspect fled empty handed, the release said.

At about 10:30 p.m., a suspect with his identity concealed and armed with a weapon went to a convenience store in the 500 block of St. Mary Avenue. He confronted the two employees, a man, 59, and a woman, 55, and demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes before fleeing the store.

Police arrested an 18-year-old man in the 200 block of Balmoral Street without incident. He’s been charged in connection with both incidents and remains in custody, police said.
