Man missing after high winds overturn boat on Lake Manitoba

One man was rescued but a second man is still missing following a boating accident Monday night on Lake Manitoba.

Amaranth RCMP said that shortly after 8 p.m. they received a report high winds had overturned a small boat on the lake near Langruth. Two men from Sandy Bay First Nation — one 22 years of age and the other 25 — were thrown into the water. One was able to swim to shore. Once located, he was taken to Portage General Hospital where he was treated and later released.

However, the second man is still missing and a search was underway this morning involving a Hercules plane from CFB Winnipeg, a rescue boat from Ebb and Flow First Nation Fire Department, and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association.

As well, police were patrolling the waterfront area near Roads 95 and 96 , which lead to the lake in the Amaranth and Langruth area.

The missing man is Dillon Beaulieu, 22, from Sandy Bay.

His sister, Francine, spoke to the Free Press and is urging people living along the southern basin of Lake Manitoba to join in the search.

"We need people on the shore to look for him," she said. "We still have hope. We don’t know if he made it to shore or not. The other guy said Dillon was yelling and struggling in the water somewhat closer to the shore. So, we have to have hope."

Francine said the two men were pulling in their fishing nets when a severe storm rolled in, with winds creating high waves that knocked the small aluminum boat over. She said neither man was wearing a life jacket.

This morning, more than 100 people are searching for him, she said.

"Young boys to old people… everyone is looking," Francine said. "Everyone with a quad is out here."
