Man gravely injured in crash with bus
WINNIPEG — One man was gravely injured when the car he was driving slammed into the back of a Winnipeg Transit bus Saturday night.
A twisted bumper and shards of glass marked the spot on St. Anne’s Road where the green Chevrolet Cavalier hurtled into the bus’s rear bumper at approximately 8:30 p.m. A lone baseball cap lay in the street near where the driver, the lone occupant of the car, was pulled out of the wreckage and carried to a waiting ambulance.
According to witnesses, the bus had slowed to drop off passengers at a stop on northbound St. Anne’s just north of Worthington Avenue, when suddenly, the Cavalier plowed into the back of the bus with a thundering crash. Debris flew as the car’s front end crumpled into and beneath the bus. The car did not appear to brake or take any action to avoid the collision, witnesses said.
After the crash, firefighters and paramedics fought to free the driver, who appeared to be unconscious and suffering from severe injuries. A small engine fire broke out while the driver was still trapped inside, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and break open the Cavalier’s door.
The driver was then rushed into an ambulance, where a Free Press reporter witnessed paramedics working vigorously to resuscitate him. The ambulance pulled away a few minutes later.
There were no reports of serious injuries to any of the passengers on the bus, and the bus showed little obvious damage. Winnipeg police were not able to confirm the driver’s condition Saturday night.
