Man still missing after river rescue goes awry

  • Print

One man is missing and presumed drowned while another has been rushed to hospital following a river rescue attempt Friday afternoon near the Provencher Bridge.

Police say an off-duty officer spotted a man in the water "who appeared to be in distress" around 2 p.m. The officer flagged down a nearby water taxi and directed them to the area where he saw the man struggling to stay afloat.

As they attempted to rescue him, the Splash Dash captain suffered an apparent heart attack. Police say he’s been rushed to hospital.

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service dive team are now on scene, trying to locate the man originally spotted in the water.
