Man wanted in connection with Portage Avenue crash arrested in Edmonton
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Edmonton in connection with a Portage Avenue crash earlier this summer after Winnipeg police say he fled the province following the collision.
The arrest comes following a crash July 15 that saw a GMC Acadia rear-end a Honda Accord that had stopped at a red light on Portage near Berry Street. The crash caused the Accord to flip onto its side, and the Jaws of Life had to be used to extract the injured 42-year-old driver. The Acadia came to rest against the wall of a nearby business.
At the time of the crash, Winnipeg police said the Acadia was clocking speeds of 110 kilometres an hour on the thoroughfare. The posted speed limit is 60.
The 42-year-old man driving the Accord was listed in serious but stable condition after the crash. The driver of the Acadia, a 21-year-old man, suffered minor injuries, as did a 17-year-old passenger.
Criminal charges were authorized following the crash, said police, but the accused fled the area, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. The Edmonton man was arrested last Wednesday by Edmonton police. Winnipeg police brought him back to Winnipeg Saturday.
Abdirahman Mohammed Yarow is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and taking a motor vehicle without consent.
