Manitoba Health urges whooping cough vaccination after spike in cases
After a sharp spike in whooping cough cases across Canada, Manitoba Health is advising all adults in regular contact with children to get vaccinated.
Vaccination against the bacterial infection is especially important for parents and caregivers of infants under two months of age, as babies that young are not able to be vaccinated against whooping cough themselves.
The vaccine is available free to all primary caregivers of newborn infants, if they haven’t been vaccinated already. Adults who are due for a tetanus booster shot and haven’t been vaccinated against whooping cough are also eligible.
So far, 13 Manitobans have been confirmed to have whooping cough, and one person has died of the infection. Manitoba generally averages about 37 cases of whooping cough each year.
Symptoms of the highly contagious infection include cold symptoms that progress to a severe cough after one to two weeks, as well as coughs with the characteristic "whoop" sound. Children are often impacted more severely than adults.
