Manitoba increases public-school funding by 2%

Education Minister James Allum has increased provincial funding for public schools by $24.4 million, a two per cent increase.

Allum challenged school trustees to provide a quality education without resorting to property tax increases. The rookie minister said that school divisions already have the financial resources to do the job in the classroom, and should start by looking at their administration costs.

The increased money will primarily go towards improving skills training and career development for students.

The NDP maintained its record of providing its share of funding the public education system at the rate of provincial growth.
