Manitobans purchased more alcohol

Manitobans’ overall purchase of alcohol was up by 5.9 per cent in 2008 over the previous year, 1.6-per-cent higher than the national average increase, Statistics Canada announced today.

Manitobans bought $586.7 million worth of beer, wine and spirits in 2008.  Canadians spent  $18.8 billion in the same time, an increase of 4.3 per cent over 2007.

Nunavut, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan reported the largest increases. Quebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia reported the least.

The growth across Canada reflected three factors: increased sales of imports over domestic products; a 1.4 per cent increase in the population older than 15; and a 1.8 per cent average increase in alcohol  prices. In litres of absolute alcohol, the volume of sales of alcoholic beverages increased 2.2 per cent to 222.9 million litres.

Statistics on sales of alcoholic beverages by volume should not be equated with data on consumption. Sales volumes include sales by liquor authorities and their agents and sales by wineries and breweries and outlets that operate under licence from the liquor authorities.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages would include all these sales, plus homemade wine and beer, wine and beer manufactured through brew-on-premises operations, sales in duty-free shops and any unrecorded transactions.

[Editor's note: Manitobans bought $586.7 million in liquor in 2008, and Canadian spent $18.8 billion. Incorrect information was previously reported.]
