Winnipeggers and Manitobans are swimming upstream – at a snail’s pace, mind you - when it comes to charitable donations.
Some 228,480 people in the province made charitable donations in 2011, up 0.1 per cent from the previous year, according to just-released figures from Statistics Canada. That’s in contrast to a 0.6 per cent decline across Canada.
The good news is those who are getting out their chequebooks are giving more than they used to. The median donation by generous Manitobans was $370. That generates a total of $382 million, an increase of 0.9 per cent. The increase across the country is even more pronounced at 2.6 per cent. The median Canadian donation is $260.
The number of Winnipeggers making charitable donations in 2011 didn’t move from 148,900 in 2010. Their median donation was $360 but they gave a total of nearly $249 million.
