Manitoba's increase in average weekly earnings smallest among provinces

Manitoba had the smallest increase in average weekly earnings of any province between August 2011 and August 2012, new Statistics Canada figures show.

The agency said today that weekly earnings grew by only 2.8 per cent during the 12-month period, rising to $838.12 from $815.36.

Newfoundland and Labrador saw the biggest increase during that period — 8.1 per cent — while the national average gain was 3.6 per cent.

On a month-to-month basis, Manitoba fared a little better, tying with Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island for the fifth largest earnings increase from July to August of this year, at 0.6 per cent. That was two tenths of a point higher than the national average gain of 0.4 per cent.

Statistics Canada said Manitoba companies also added 13,900 new employees during the August-to-August period. It said the number of payroll employees — people who work for someone, as opposed to being self-employed — rose by 2.5 per cent to 579,100 from 565,200. That included an increase of 3,700, or 0.6 per cent, from July to August of this year.

Nationally, the agency said the number of payroll employees grew by 0.3 per cent from July to August — 15.32 million versus 15.27 million — and by 2.1 per cent from August of last year, when there were 15.05 million.
