Milner Street barricaded after industrial spill

A street in Inkster Industrial Park was barricaded Tuesday afternoon while emergency crews dealt with an industrial spill.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to Smooth Freight, a business on Milner Street, where a forklift punctured a 15-centimetre-wide hole near the bottom of a vessel containing a 40-per-cent solution of sodium bisulphite, a common food preservative, city spokeswoman Alissa Clark said.

Approximately 660 litres spilled out, but emergency crews were able to stop the spill by turning the container on its side. Sawdust was spread to absorb the fluid, Clark said.

The spill caused no injuries and no damage to the city’s sewers or sewage-treatment system, she added.

Almost the entire length of Milner Street, which runs between Inkster Boulevard and Church Avenue, was closed while the WFPS attended to the incident.

No evacuations took place, though workers in adjacent buildings were asked to stay inside.
