Miraculins' cholesterol tests roll out in Eastern Canada

Miraculins, the Winnipeg medical-diagnostic company has teamed up with PharmaChoice to introduce the PreVu non-invasive skin cholesterol point of care (POC) test in Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

The Dartmouth, N.S.-based chain of 350 independent pharmacies will roll out the test in 50 stores in Ontario and Atlantic Canada in early February during Canada’s National Heart Health Month.

The introductory campaign will see the PreVu POC test conducted in-store by PharmaChoice pharmacists as part of a series of special PreVu Cardiovascular Risk-Assessment Clinics.

Phase two of the expansion will see additional PharmaChoice locations being added in the months that follow available either through walk-up request or by appointment.

In the fall Miraculins had its initial PreVu market launch in 10 London Drugs stores in Western Canada including one in Winnipeg.

Lowell Johnstone, PharmaChoice’s director of pharmacy services, said the plan is eventually roll it out to all locations across the country.

PharmaChoice does not have any locations in Manitoba.

The PreVu POC Test does not diagnose the presence or absence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and is not considered a substitute for blood serum cholesterol testing.

But it can quickly identify individuals who may possess hidden, higher levels of risk of CAD by measuring their skin cholesterol levels without blood draw or fasting.

Clinical studies have shown that elevated skin cholesterol is strongly associated with an increased risk of serious atherosclerotic disease.
