Manitou man's body recovered from Lake Winnipeg

The body of a Manitou man missing on Lake Winnipeg since November has been recovered.

The RCMP said the body was found Sunday afternoon, about 2.5 kilometres from where it went missing near Matheson Island.

An exhaustive search was launched Nov. 14 after the man’s boat flipped after hitting a reef on a trip from Matheson Island to Bloodvein.

A second man in the boat was able to swim to the reef, who was later spotted by a fisherman checking his nets.

A search was conducted that included local volunteers, a CC130 Hercules aircraft and a Search and Rescue team from the Canadian air force, a local search and rescue team from Matheson Island, and the RCMP.

Police said the two men were not wearing lifejackets at the time.

An autopsy confirmed the identity of the body found Sunday.

Police said that while initial reports identified the man as a resident of Niverville, he had been living in Manitou at the time of the accident.

His identity will not be released.
