Missing, slain women spotlighted

THE Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is holding a downtown event today to keep the issue of missing and slain women in the public eye.

Today's event starts with a walk from the Scotiabank Main Stage at The Forks at 10 a.m., to a rally at 11 a.m. at TD Centre, 201 Portage Ave.

The AMC hopes the event will draw more public attention to the issue and compel the governments to call a national inquiry into the matter.

Grand Chief Derek Nepinak said he isn't sure what tangible evidence will come from an inquiry but said it will raise the serious issues involved to a new level and that evidence might emerge.

The province turned down an earlier call for a provincial inquiry after the arrest of suspected serial killer Shawn Lamb, saying it won't happen while criminal prosecutions proceed.
