January date set for Morris, Arthur-Virden byelections

  • Print

Byelections in the Manitoba constituencies of Morris and Arthur-Virden will be held on Jan. 28, the Selinger government has announced.

Nominations will close on Jan. 13 and advance polls will open in both ridings Jan. 18-25. On voting day, polls will remain open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Morris seat has been vacant since February, when Progressive Conservative MLA Mavis Taillieu resigned. The Conservatives have repeatedly criticized Premier Greg Selinger for failing to fill the vacancy.

Arthur-Virden was vacated this fall when longtime Tory MLA Larry Maguire resigned to run as a federal Conservative candidate in Brandon-Souris. Maguire was successful in the Nov. 25 federal byelection.

There are currently 37 New Democrats, 17 Progressive Conservatives, one Liberal and two vacant seats in the Manitoba legislature.
