Motorists in for slippery drive tonight

Motorists are in for a slippery drive tonight.

The mercury in Winnipeg has dropped to -12 C and Environment Canada said the windchill will make it feel like -26 C overnight.

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation's latest highway conditions report shows several roadways across southern Manitoba are ice-covered and slippery. Highway 1 east from Falcon Lake to the Ontario border was closed due to a traffic accident earlier this evening, but has since reopened.

Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Natalie Hasell said it's not unusual to see rain in early December, and much of Manitoba was covered by a low-pressure system which brought warm temperatures. However, Hasell said cold, northwesterly air is now moving in as the system moves across the province, bringing heavy snow to northern Manitoba and colder temperatures to the south.

By noon today, she said a weather observer in Norway House reported the community received 40 centimetres of snow - potentially a new one-day snowfall record.

"In December it's possible to get liquid precipitation," she said.
