National human rights tool kit for teachers planned
The Assembly of First Nations has joined the partnership to compile, promote, and distribute a human rights national tool kit for teachers.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Canadian Teachers Federation announced the resource last week in Winnipeg.
The group will encourage young people to work on grassroots projects as Canadian Defenders for Human Rghts.
"Canadian Defenders for Human Rights" is a curriculum tool designed to raise awareness of human rights issues within Canadian high school students. It is also a national mobilizing activity for students from coast to coast to coast, building solidarity, recognition and support for human rights globally and locally," CTF president Paul taillefer told a news conference in Ottawa.
"This multi-year initiative aims to heighten awareness about human rights, develop students’ critical thinking skills and ignite social activism in support of human rights at the local, national and international levels," said Taillefer.
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) — Canada’s national Inuit organization — and the U.S.-based Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights will also be part of the project.
The Kennedy Center said it would provide a Canadian version of human rights resources.
