New $50 bill introduced today has local link

The country's first plastic $50 bill will have a unique connection to Manitoba.

This afternoon, the Bank of Canada will begin circulating the new polymer bank note, which will feature the CCGS Amundsen, a research ice-breaker used by the University of Manitoba's Arctic researchers. The bill will be unveiled at an event at U of M's Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility.

Canada's first plastic $100 bill was unveiled last year, and the new money has a lot of security features that make it harder to counterfeit.
