New East Elmwood centre to include gym, rink, amenities

East Elmwood community centre will receive a total of $5 million to rebuild.

Earlier this month, the city released its 2013 budget which pledges to use nearly half of the $7 million once set aside to subsidize a private water-park -- $3.2 million jointly supported by city and province -- to rebuild the fire-destroyed East Elmwood community centre.

Today, the city and province announced Winnipeg will also contribute $900,000 from its insurance reserve fund and the province will contribute another $900,00 in incremental funding to help rebuild the community centre.

The new centre will be about 10,000-square-feet in size and include a gymnasium, multi-purpose room, dressing rooms, and an outdoor rink.

Detailed design plans will be drafted this year and construction is expected to tentatively begin in 2014.
