New crop of lawyers to be welcomed to the bar

The annual Call to the Bar ceremony today will see 69 candidates for admission to the bar be presented to the chief justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench.

The ceremony, at 9 a.m. at Centennial Concert Hall, is a special sitting of the court. The judiciary of Manitoba, Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bar Association are to take part.

Brenda Silver, the law society’s director, professional education and competence, will present the 69 candidates to Chief Justice Glenn Joyal.

Guest speaker is Chief Justice Richard Scott of the Manitoba Court of Appeal.

Justice Freda Steel of the Court of Appeal will present the A. Montague Israels, Q.C. Memorial Prize for the outstanding bar admission course student to one of the candidates
