New home to add at least 100 personal care beds in Transcona

  • Print

A new personal care home is going to be built in Transcona.

The facility, which will include at least 100 beds, is to be developed by Park Manor Personal Care Homes Inc. on its site at Kildare Avenue East and Redonda Street.

It will be built next to the current 100-bed personal care home and the East Park Lodge independent living complex for seniors.

The three facilities will be connected by a new concourse.

Construction is expected to begin in 2015 and take about two years to complete, Health Minister Erin Selby said Monday.

In addition to having private rooms with washrooms, the new facility will include space for recreational activities, family areas and landscaped outside grounds, she said.

Once the full design is completed, a public open house will be held.

Park Manor Personal Care Home Inc. was the successful proponent in a request for qualifications issued by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to non-profit organizations interested in developing new personal care homes in northeast and south Winnipeg.

Selby said a second new personal care home of at least 100 beds is also being developed in south Winnipeg by Winnipeg Mennonite Seniors Care Inc. In addition to these new facilities, design is also well underway for a major expansion to the Holy Family Home in north Winnipeg along with new personal care homes in Lac du Bonnet and Morden.

There are 125 personal care homes in the province including the new 80-bed Heritage Life personal care home in Niverville, which opened in 2013. In Winnipeg, 38 personal care homes provide care to more than 5,500 people. Province-wide, more than 9,700 people receive care in a nursing home.
