New rec facility on former Kelvin site named after Clara Hughes
The redeveloped recreation facility at the former Kelvin Community Centre site in Elmwood will be named after speedskater and cyclist Clara Hughes.
This afternoon, Mayor Sam Katz and community centre officials announced the redeveloped site would be named in honour of the Winnipegger and decorated Olympian.
Hughes grew up in Elmwood and said the former Kelvin Community Centre site is where she played ringette and softball. She said every child deserves a safe place to play and develop their athleticism.
Hughes pulled out her Olympic medals from her purse at the announcement.
"This is what's possible," said Hughes, who will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame tonight.
At an Oct. 26 press conference at the site, Katz and Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux confirmed $700,000 in funding to replace an outdoor hockey rink, build an accessible playground and place other amenities at the site of the former community centre, which was torn down in 2008.
