The mystery involving Winnipeg’s discoloured water will soon be explained.

Public works chairman Coun. Justin Swandel said a consultant’s report on the situation that plagued thousands of homes last summer and fall has been completed.

Swandel (St. Norbert) said he’s quickly read the report, adding it pinpoints the cause of the brown water.

He said he expects the complete consultant’s report will be presented to members of council at a special council seminar late next week, followed by a presentation to the media.

The full report, he said, will be included in the next public works committee agenda, which is set for Feb. 4.

"There is some good information (in the report) but I’m not at liberty to disclose that right now," Swandel said.

Discoloured water has been an annual occurrence in the city for decades but there were twice as many complaints in 2013 from past years with no explanation. City officials estimated between 3,500 and 4,000 homes were affected.

Manitoba Health has tested the water and concluded it doesn’t pose a health hazard but the city advised homeowners not to drink it, bathe in it, cook with it, or wash their dishes or clothes in it. Later, council ordered administration to accept proven claims for laundry damaged by discoloured water.
