MORNING FIRES INVESTIGATED
POLICE and firefighters are investigating two Saturday-morning house fires in the city’s core.
A home and neighbouring garage were damaged Saturday morning after fire broke out on Gallagher Avenue.
The blaze was reported at around 6:20 a.m., and involved the rear of the house at 14 Gallagher Ave. and the garage at 10 Gallagher Ave.
Total damage is estimated at $50,000.
No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
At about 5:50 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire on the 600 block of Victor Street. There were no injuries from the fire, but the arson strike force is investigating.
THREE SOUGHT IN HOME INVASION
POLICE are investigating a home invasion in East Kildonan early Saturday morning.
Just after midnight, several armed men burst into a home in the 100 block of Roch Street and robbed residents of their property.
Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said it’s not clear what type of weapons the men were carrying. Three adults were home at the time, but they were not injured.
No arrests have been made.
MAN ARRESTED IN ATTACK ON CABBIE
A 33-year-old Winnipeg man is in custody following the latest attack on a city taxi driver.
Police said the 37-year-old cabbie was not hurt in the assault, which occurred after the driver picked up three men in St. Vital just before midnight Thursday. The trio had been "socializing" before the taxi picked them up, police said.
The passenger seated behind the driver was intoxicated and reached around the cabbie’s shield to assault him, then tried to dismantle the safety shield. The passenger in the front seat intervened and told the backseat assailant to stop it. The cab stopped and the three men got out near Jubilee Avenue and Osborne Street. The assailant fled, and police were called. A suspect was later arrested and charged with assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
He’s being held in the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
