No more freebie Jets tickets for government types

The Selinger government is about to come down on cabinet ministers and senior mandarins who have received free admission to Winnipeg Jets games.

Finance Minister Stan Struthers confirmed today free tickets made available through Crown corporations, like the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission, will not be made available to ministers or board members of Crown corporations. The MLCC last season got 10 season tickets in exchange for advertising it spent with the Jets.

Struthers said the policy, to be released shortly by the Manitoba Crown Corporations Council, is needed to end any confusion over what should happen with the tickets as the Jets are the premium attraction in Winnipeg.

He said the policy will make it clear the tickets should be made available to community groups, like minor hockey teams.

"The Jets ticket is the hottest ticket in town," Struthers said. "We want this to be fair."

Two cabinet ministers, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton and Justice Minister Andrew Andrew Swan, who got into games last season for free have since paid for their tickets.

"We want to ensure that Manitobans are treated fairly," Struthers said. "We're looking at a policy where cabinet members pay their own tickets, they wouldn't accept tickets from Crown corporations or other organizations that we do government business with."
