Number of confirmed Manitoba West Nile cases grows

The good news on the West Nile Disease front is that the Winnipeg man who was seriously ill with the disease last week has now been released from hospital.

The not-so-good news is that more Manitobans are being detected with the mosquito-transmitted infection.

Manitoba Health said today that the total number of Manitobans known to have contracted West Nile this summer has now risen to 20. Last Friday, the total stood at nine.

However, none of the 11 new cases detected this past week have involved the most serious form of the disease, the department reported on its website.

Only one man — a Winnipegger in his 50s — has been diagnosed with neurological syndrome West Nile. He was hospitalized but has since been released, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority confirmed today. A WRHA spokeswoman would not say how long the man spent in hospital or provide any more information about his case due to privacy legislation.
