Woman rescued from burning house taken to hospital in unstable condition

A woman was taken to hospital in unstable condition this morning after being rescued from a burning house in River Heights, a fire department spokesman said.

The woman, estimated to be in her early to mid-40s, was found unconscious in a second-floor bedroom while a fire burned below in the kitchen of the house in the 700 block of Niagara Street.

Fire crews arrived on the scene shortly after 9 a.m., extinguished the fire and pulled the woman to safety. She was taken to the Health Sciences Centre.

Five people reportedly live in the house. The husband had apparently left for work by the time the blaze started and three children were in school. The husband was called back from work and was on scene as firefighters started their investigation and clean-up.

"There were heavy smoke conditions," said Platoon Chief Frank Leswick. "We took an offensive attack and extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A damage estimate is yet to be determined.

The family's two small dogs escaped from the fire unharmed.
