At 1085 Winnipeg St, there's a hidden treasure that is one of the most important places in Manitoba.

I'm talking about Winnipeg Harvest, the heart and soul of food banks and food-assistance programs in all of Manitoba and home to some of the greatest volunteers and staff this side of the galaxy.

The old warehouse, currently in the process of getting a much-needed restoration, certainly isn't the most beautiful place in the city. However, anyone who has ever been to Harvest will agree with me it is a special place, budding with people who are genuinely good-hearted and who want to make a difference in the world.

Inside the old warehouse of surplus food donations, is a community of people from all different backgrounds, who work hard to make a small change in the lives of others. Everyone has a different reason for volunteering, some of them do it because they want to help, and others do it because they want to give back. There's a real sense of goodness that resonates throughout the building and it's contagious.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Harvest is that no matter who you are, or what your lot in life is, respect and dignity follow you around the building. Everyone is equal and works together toward the same goal.

The experience of Harvest, and its volunteers, is one that will change your life, or at least your perspective on life. Most importantly, it will change you.
