Overnight fires send three people to hospital

Two fires in Winnipeg sent three people to hospital last night.

A man, 43, and a woman, 67, were taken to hospital before midnight Saturday after a fire broke out in a main-floor bedroom of a bungalow in the 400 block of Seaton Street. The man and woman were transported to hospital in unstable condition but were later upgraded to stable condition.

Damage to the home was estimated at $125,000, Winnipeg police said in a news release. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the arson strike force.

The other fire at a three-storey rooming house in the 600 block of Maryland Street sent a 53-year-old man to the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition. His condition has since been upgraded to stable. There were five people in the rooming house at the time of the fire.

The blaze was contained to one suite at the rear of the main floor and caused an estimated $50,000 damage to the house and $10,000 to contents, a fire department spokeswoman said. That fire is also under investigation by the arson strike force and further details were not available, she said.
