A U.S.-based education organization that recruits young volunteers was walking on fertile ground today.

AnnMaura Connelly, chief strategy officer with City Year Inc., which oversees young people serving full-time in schools in the U.S., the U.K. and South Africa, was at the Millennium Library Thursday morning making a pitch to bring the program to Canada.

She will also visit City Hall and Mayor Sam Katz at 4 p.m.

Connelly was invited to town by Coun. Brian Mayes, who believes there are many young Winnipeggers who want to give something back to their community.

"We need to start a dialogue about options for serving the less advantaged parts of the city. The City Year program operates across the globe," he said.

Connolly, will be interviewed at the Free Press News Café 1:30 p.m.

The event will be livestreamed here.
