Plessis Road widening, bridge eyed for funding: Toews

An estimated $77-million project to widen Plessis Road and build a new rail bridge is another step closer to reality.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, Manitoba's senior MP, said today the Plessis Road underpass just north of Dugald Road is being considered as a priority for funding under the Building Canada Fund.
Under the proposed deal Ottawa is to cover up to one third of the project up to a maximum of $25 million. The province will also contribute up to $25 million with the city paying $27 million.
The work will see a two-lane stretch of Plessis Road, between Pandora Avenue and Dugald Road, widened to four lanes. An underpass will also be built on Plessis at the CN Redditt rail crossing to eliminate traffic jams caused by trains.
Federal funding is conditional upon a federal review of the project.
Work is to start next year and take two years to complete. Land assembly has already started.
