Police charge man with pedestrian's death

Winnipeg police have arrested the alleged driver of the speeding car who fled a crash scene Friday morning that resulted in the death of a 53-year-old pedestrian.

Police tracked the driver to a residence in the northwest part of the city on Sunday and arrested him on several related charges, including driving dangerously and causing a death.

The driver was allegedly behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Impala packed with six passengers that ran a red light and hit another car. The force of the collision pushed the second car onto the sidewalk at Isabel Street and Notre Dame Avenue, striking the pedestrian.

The driver of the second car, a Honda CRV and its three passengers were injured and all of them were admitted to hospital in stable condition Friday after the 6 a.m. crash.

The female pedestrian's death was reported later Friday.

"The driver of the Impala was uninjured and without apparent concern for the others involved in the collision, fled the scene," Winnipeg police said in a statement Monday.

The Impala was speeding through a red light north on Isabel when it struck the Honda, headed west on Notre Dame.

Dakota Dennis Smoke, 18, of Winnipeg remained in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre Monday.
