Chief of Police Devon Clunis shared some of his current downtown safety initiatives at a luncheon at the Delta hotel Wednesday.
Claiming the status quo was not and never will be effective, Chief Clunis said he and the Winnipeg Police Service have shifted their focus towards creating social responsibility as opposed to simply arresting people.
Some initiatives include the realignment of the street crime unit, expansion of the aboriginal relations team and community forums.
Clunis told a scrum of reporters he is confident in his approach. He believes there will be a radical change in Winnipeg crime rates within the next five to 10 years.
