Body discovered in lane near Burrows and Main: neighbours

Winnipeg Police have closed off traffic to eastbound Burrows Avenue at Main Street for an undisclosed reason -- but area residents say a woman's body was found in the area.

Winnipeg Police said they responded to the area at about 2:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Three police squad cars and the identification unit were on scene. Police tape closed off the Taste of Europe Fine Foods & Delicatessen on Main Street and its adjacent parking lot.

Sean Freeman, who lives in the Osborne Centre, said he went outside for a cigarette just after 2 p.m. and saw a police car pull up in front.

"I saw this other guy standing there on a mountain bike and I asked him if he knew what was up, why the cops were here. He said he had found a female body," Freeman said.

A resident in a home on Magnus Avenue, whose yard faces out onto the alley, said he was picking crab apples in his back yard early this afternoon when he heard a woman yelling that she had found a body.

"There had been a smell for about a week, but I figured it was just garbage. I didn't get too close cause I didn't want to see, but the woman said it was a woman's body," said the man, who gave his name as Eddie.

Anne, another neighbourhood resident, said she was driving to church just after 2 p.m. and noticed a swarm of people and police around the Main Street deli.

Anne said she was told by other residents that a body had been found in the Dumpster in the alley between Burrows Avenue and Magnus Avenue.

Anne raised concern that a family friend she has known for decades has been missing for two days.
