Assault at River Heights family gathering sends man to hospital

Police are investigating what caused a fight to break out at a family gathering in River Heights that sent a 25-year-old man to hospital in critical condition.
Winnipeg police said the incident occurred at a residence in the 100 block of Lindsay Street at 2:10 a.m. this morning. A 25-year-old man suffering from serious upper body injuries was taken to hospital.
Officers from the major crimes unit are investigating.
Police Const. Jason Michalyshen said it appears there was a family gathering at the residence. He said officers are still trying to determine whether the assault took place inside the home or outside on the street. He said police are conducting interviews with individuals who were present at the time of the assault, and more information will be released tomorrow.
"It does appear people at the home knew each other. There are no indications this was a random act," Michalyshen said.
The two-storey home is surrounded by yellow police tape and cadets are on scene.
Area residents say it's a rare sight to see in River Heights.
"That would be a once-in-a-lifetime thing around here," said one woman, who wanted to remain anonymous.
Denise Lavoie lives across the street and said she heard police sirens shortly after 2 a.m. and assumed cops had caught someone speeding. She said she was shocked to look out her window and see a cadet cruiser parked on a lawn, and a crime scene.
"It's not a very good feeling when it happens that close to home," Lavoie said. "That's a little creepy for me."
