Police nab man after fires set in North End

An 18-year-old man is in custody following suspicious fires in the North End overnight, police report.

At about 1:20 a.m. police noticed smoke coming from a garage in the 400 block of Stella Avenue. While at that location, police saw a vehicle on fire in the 500 block of Stella Avenue and a man running from the scene, a police spokeswoman said this morning.

The suspect was apprehended and the incident is under investigation, police said. There is no damage estimate available for the car set ablaze in the 500 block, a fire department spokesman said.

The garage fire in the 400 block of Stella caused $15,000 damage to the garage and $1,000 to a car, he said. No one was injured. The cause of the blaze is suspicious and under investigation.

John Percy Patrick St. Paul, 18, of Winnipeg has been charged with two counts of arson (damage to property) and two counts of breach of probation.

He was detained in custody.
