A Winnipeg police Tactical Support Team member ran into a burning inner-city apartment building on Thursday afternoon and safely rescued an 81-year-old man.
The Tactical Support Team had been patrolling in the 400 block of Sargent Avenue around 2 p.m. when they saw a fire within an apartment block.
After members of the unit reported the fire, an officer ran into the building. On the second floor, the officer was informed by two other men that they attempted to rescue an elderly man from within a suite but they were forced back due to smoke.
The officer ran into the smoke-filled suite and removed a disoriented 81-year-old man. Both the officer and the elderly man were treated for minor injuries.
The cause of the fire, which caused damages estimated at $150,000, has not yet been determined.
