Man faces charges after armed standoff with police

A man who pointed a rifle at police and then barricaded himself in an Assiniboine Avenue suite Wednesday night before he was taken into custody six hours later now faces a number of charges.

Winnipeg police say a 47-year-old man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and six counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon.

He remains in custody.

Officers found an airsoft long-barrelled rifle, several knives, brass knuckles and a collapsible baton in the suite.

The arrest was made about 11 p.m. -- six hours after officers went to the suite in the 300 block of Assiniboine to check on the well-being of a resident.

In a 16th floor suite, officers were confronted by distraught man who pointed a rifle at them, forcing them to back off.

A heavily armed tactical team and trained negotiators were called the scene, and a portion of the building was evacuated. The man was arrested without incident.
