Premier, French officials to honour D-Day vets

Premier Greg Selinger and officials from France will honour Manitoba’s D-Day vets at the legislative building at noon today.

Annie Anne, vice-president of Lower Normandy, and Philippe Zeller, ambassador of France to Canada, will also attend.

The event starts at noon in room 200 of the legislative building with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Lower Normandy.

It will be followed by a wreath-laying and presentation of medallions to veterans of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

On June 6, 1944, Canadian soldiers landed at Juno Beach as part of the massive Allied landings on the Normandy coastline.

Canadians then advanced on the city of Caen.

With the capture of Caen, Canadian forces next participated in the battle of the Falaise Gap and later the Battle of the Scheldt and the capture of the port of Antwerp, which opened up Allied shipping to supply troops for the liberation of Europe from Nazi forces.
