Province announces funding for expansion of composting in Brandon

The province will spend $300,000 over two years to support Brandon's composting program, Premier Greg Selinger said in Brandon today.

The money will go towards the expansion of Brandon’s automated organic waste collection system to 6,000 households.

The province said in a release that the program is expected to divert an additional 2,600 tonnes of organic waste from the Eastview Landfill every year, extending the estimated life of the landfill by a full six years to 2048.

The automated curb-side organic waste collection system was first introduced in Brandon as a year-long pilot project in July 2010. More than 500 households took part.

A city-wide program is expected to launch in Brandon in the spring of 2013.

More information on Brandon's program is available at www.brandon.ca/departments/operations/sanitation/composting.
