Province lifts its restrictions on campfires

The weather outside is frightful, but if it’s any consolation the province announced this morning that it has lifted its restrictions on campfires.

Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship issued a news release stating that "due to accumulated rain and snowfall, forecast precipitation and higher evening humidity" burning permits will again be issued in western, central and eastern Manitoba.

Campfires are now permitted in approved fire pits in these areas. Backcountry travel restrictions in eastern Manitoba have also been lifted.

The province cautioned, however, that some municipalities may still have additional fire restrictions in place.

People living, working, camping or travelling through forested areas of Manitoba are still advised to use caution as some areas remain dry, the province said.

Anyone using an all-terrain vehicle is asked to check areas around the engine and exhaust frequently. Operators should carry a fire extinguisher, small axe and shovel with them, the province said.
