Province releases algae advisories for beaches

As the weekend heats up and Winnipeggers head to the beach, they can rest assured the waters are mostly safe for swimming.

On Friday, the province announced that E. coli levels were within acceptable levels at all beaches monitored by Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship.

However, algae levels were high at Lake Winnipeg’s West Grand Beach lagoon and Hillside Beach on July 9, and also at Pelican Lake on July 10.

The province retested the beaches on July 11 and found that algae levels had dropped below the recreational water use limit at Hillside.

None of those three beaches had unacceptable levels of an algae-borne toxin, microcystin-LR, however.

As a result of the tests, algae advisories have been posted at West Grand Beach Lagoon, Hillside Beach and Pelican Lake. Swimmers are urged to avoid major algae blooms, and not let pets drink from water near the shore.

The province urged swimmers to stay on the lookout.

"Algae blooms are difficult to predict and may form and then disperse quickly," the province said in a release. "Warm and calm weather coupled with relatively high nutrient loads provide ideal conditions for blue-green algae to develop."

There were also reports of algae blooms this week at the Rock Lake Christian Enrichment Camp and at Killarney Lake Beach. The province is currently testing samples from those areas.
