Puppy found in dumpster

Animal Services Officers discovered a puppy had been tossed in a dumpster in the 1000 block of Jefferson Avenue last week. Rayne, the puppy, remains in the care of Animal Services Agency and has received medical treatment.
Leland Gordon, chief operating officer of the city’s Animal Services Agency, said the puppy is about eight weeks old and is a shepherd-collie mix.
He said the puppy was found last week after Animal Services for a call leading them to a dumpster behind apartments on Jefferson Avenue.
"The dog was soaking wet because it was one of those days that was pouring rain," said Gordon.
The dog was given medical care and vitamins, though Gordon said the dog "was actually in overall pretty good health."
She got her name in reference to the weather she was found in.
"The dog’s been eating a lot while she’s been here," said Gordon, who said the dog – a female – has gained a pound during her stay.
Animal Services officials wish to remind residents of Winnipeg that if they are unable to care for their dogs, there are plenty of resources available. Asking family, friends, co-workers, and contacting animal welfare groups in Winnipeg is the first step.
"If you can’t care for your pet for whatever reason, don’t put it in a dumpster," said Gordon. "This dog could have died obviously, if we hadn’t recovered it."
He said Animal Services has about 26 puppies and dogs up for adoption right now.
Rayne hasn’t been adopted out yet, due to a five-day holding period Animal Services has. "There’s lots of people who have called in," said Gordon.
He encouraged people to check out the City of Winnipeg website at Winnipeg.ca/animalservices to see other animals up for adoption.
