RCMP Holiday Checkstop program results in 110 impaired driving charges

  • Print

Five people were killed in fatal collisions and 110 people were charged with impaired driving during this year’s RCMP Holiday Checkstop program.

10,094 cars were checked during 357 Checkstops from Dec. 2 until Jan. 1. The RCMP said that cold temperatures and blizzard-like conditions throughout the month of December severely hindered this year’s program.

On top of the impaired driving charges, the RCMP also gave out 46 alcohol related license suspensions, 33 charges for not wearing a seatbelt, 50 Liquor Control Act charges, 27 Criminal Code Driving offenses, and 1042 other Highway Traffic Act offenses.

None of the fatal collisions involved impaired driving.

Last year’s checkstop program resulted in 141 impaired driving charges. Three people were also killed in fatal collisions, one death was a result of impaired driving.
