RCMP charge 36 with impaired driving over Thanksgiving weekend

Thirty-six people were charged with impaired driving following RCMP's long-weekend crackdown on high-risk drivers.

Manitoba RCMP targeted high-risk drivers last weekend and charged 35 people with impaired driving and one person for impaired driving with a drug. Police also issued seven 24-hour alcohol-related roadside suspensions, 49 tickets for failing to wear seatbelts, and nine tickets for using a handheld electronic device while driving.

RCMP issued 490 other traffic charges for offences such as speeding. Another 15 people were charged under the criminal code for offences such as driving while prohibited.

Last year, 19 people were charged with impaired driving during the Thanksgiving weekend enforcement campaign. Three people died in vehicle collisions over the Thanksgiving weekend in 2011.
