RCMP checkstop program nabs 19 drunk drivers

Week one of the RCMP Christmas Checkstop Program resulted in 19 people being charged with impaired driving, 17 less than charged last year.

Between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9, 2603 vehicles were checked across Manitoba. The average blood/alcohol reading of those charged was 0.156, almost twice the legal limit of .08, with the highest blood/alcohol level being 0.260 which is over three times the legal limit. Four other people were charged with refusing to take a breathalyzer and one person was charged with being impaired by a drug.

Other stats from week one of the program include 10 24-hour alcohol-related roadside suspensions, 11 people charged with not wearing their seatbelts, 360 other traffic-related charges laid and four criminal code driving offences. There were also four drug seizures including two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

There were no fatal collisions during week one of the program.

Last year during week one of the Checkstop Program there were three fatalities and 36 people charged with impaired driving. RCMP did pull over less vehicles this year, saying cold weather and slippery roads made traffic conditions dangerous for conducting checkstops.
