RCMP clerk jumps into northern lake to save two young boys

A clerk at the RCMP detachment in Island Lake is being credited with saving the lives of two preschoolers who nearly drowned Sunday.

On her day off, Melody Harper was driving with her 12-year-old daughter, Kalvina, when she saw a group of children on a rock by the water’s edge in the remote northern community.

Harper saw one child fall into the water. She quickly drove to the site where she saw the child fall. With no path to the water, Harper and her daughter ran through the bush to reach the children, RCMP said in a news release.

When they got to the rock where the children were last seen, they saw two lifeless bodies floating face down, not just the one child she saw fall in the water. Harper handed her phone to her daughter to call for help and jumped in the water and swam to the children.

She reached the four-year-old boy first, got him to shore and passed him to her daughter. She swam back for the second child, a three-year-old boy, and got him to shore. The four-year-old  became conscious and alert when pulled from the water. The three-year-old was not breathing.

Harper began administering artificial resuscitation and continued until help arrived. Both children were rushed to the local nursing station. The four-year-old was cared for and released while the three-year-old was airlifted to Winnipeg, where he has since been released.

It appears the children had wandered off from family members, RCMP said. There were no adults in the area at the time.
