RCMP plan Thanksgiving weekend checkstops

RCMP will spend the Thanksgiving weekend looking for turkeys – the human type who drive drunk, text while driving or speed.

Police warn they will launch on Friday a four-day campaign of extra patrols and checkstops designed to catch dangerous drivers throughout Manitoba.

"Our members will be keeping a close eye on the highways this weekend" says RCMP Insp. Joanne Keeping in a news release today. "Our goal is to educate the public on safe driving behaviors and ensure that everyone stays safe while traveling to visit family and friends this weekend."

In rural Manitoba, 75 people have already lost their lives as a result of a traffic collision this year. The majority of these deaths were completely preventable. Last year, three people were killed over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
